Pelvic Floor Health - What Every Woman Should Know

Pelvic floor dysfunction is more common than most people realise - and more treatable than you might think.

Pelvic floor dysfunction affects a significant number of women at some point in their lives - yet it's one of the most under-discussed health issues in Australia. Many women assume that leaking when they sneeze, or ongoing pelvic discomfort, is just something they have to live with. It isn't.

Women's health physiotherapy can make a real and lasting difference. Here's what you need to know.

What Is the Pelvic Floor?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue that forms the base of the pelvis. These structures support the bladder, uterus, and bowel, and play a role in bladder and bowel control, sexual function, and core stability.

Like any muscle group, the pelvic floor can become weak, overactive, or poorly coordinated - and when it does, symptoms follow.

Common Signs of Pelvic Floor Dysfunction

  • Leaking urine when coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising (stress incontinence)
  • A sudden, strong urge to urinate that's difficult to control (urge incontinence)
  • Pelvic heaviness or pressure
  • Pain during or after intercourse
  • Lower back or pelvic pain, particularly during or after pregnancy
  • Difficulty with bowel movements

These symptoms are common - but they are not normal, and they don't have to be permanent.

When Does Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Occur?

While pelvic floor issues can affect women at any age, certain life stages increase the risk:

  • Pregnancy - the growing uterus places significant load on the pelvic floor throughout pregnancy
  • Childbirth - vaginal delivery in particular can stretch or damage pelvic floor muscles and nerves
  • Menopause - hormonal changes reduce tissue elasticity and can weaken pelvic floor support
  • High-impact exercise - repeated loading without adequate pelvic floor strength can cause or worsen symptoms
